Training

Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness and resources, many people who live with visual impairments have no access to education. This hinders their access to job opportunities and living an independent life, which leaves them dependent on their families and other organizations or individuals. A large part of our work revolves around providing skills-based training to individuals who are past the school-going age. Computer and technical skills, for instance, are a major area that our centers provide training in. These skills are crucial to the modern world and allow the visually impaired integrate and rehabilitate into society with a lot more ease, given that they have access to such job opportunities. In addition to providing technical skills, we also offer training in telephone operating, Braille learning (short courses) and courses on mobility techniques. Each of these is a valuable skill that individuals can carry forth to their workplaces. There are also many different vocational training courses we offer, helping individuals develop skillsets that are enough to sustain an income. For example, we teach tailoring and dressmaking, sewing, cutting and stitching, which is a valuable skill that allows them to work independently or for other tailors, boutiques and organizations. We also teach hand and machine embroidery. Apart from that, people can also learn how to create crafts through additional skills like knitting, macramé, making tissue boxes and wall hangings that can be sold for income. Other vocational and domestic skills including cooking and ironing, among others, as a way to be independent and as services that can be offered.
